dead & nailed.
Opus Dei Clothing is dead. This is going to be one of the last posts from Opus Dei due to a swift execution from the suits, read more below, any questions please ask. Thanks to everyone that supported Opus Dei and all of you who picked up one of the 150 limited shirts, got flyers through the post, hassled me about more tie dye and anyone who sent countless emails asking about what the fuck is going on haha."I am writing from Opus Dei, a Catholic organisation which has existed for 80 years.I wondered why you chose our name for your clothing range, with the upside-down cross etc.One of our members pointed it out to me and you can understand why some find it offensive. As you have not been around for very long, can you not use a different name, not already in useby another organisation?
Let me know what you think.
Jack""Dear Tom
Thank you very much for your email. You are right: Opus Dei translates from the Latin into Work of God.Nowadays, however, we do not usually speak in Latin but use specific words to refer to institutions and products, including brand names and registered trade marks.
Opus Dei is a registered trade mark in the UK, Europe and the rest of the world(Trade Mark No. E844860 registered in Europe on 8 June 1998) and it is an offence to use the trade mark asa brand name without the permission of the trade mark owner. As you know you cannot use the brand name Nike for your products without the permission of the owner of theregistered trade mark even though it comes from the Greek goddess of victory. The law governing trade marksis the Trade Mark Act and is dealt with by the Patent Office, also called Intellectual Property Office, www.ipo.gov.uk
It is true that there are different classes of services and products. The Patent Office took the view, however, that no product or service could be registered under the name Opus Dei unless “relating to or provided by theRoman Catholic organisation ‘Opus Dei’” (Letter from The Patent Office,Examination Report, 17 January 1994, page 3).
I hope that the above explains the position, and as you have just used the namefor some seasonal clothing it’s as easy for you to stop using it in the future.
Regards
Jack"
